The 12th Day of Health and Fitmass

12th December Advent

The countdown to Christmas has begun and to get you in the festive mood we have launched our annual Health and Fitmass online blog Advent Calendar, packed to the top of it's little christmas stocking with exclusive offers.

On the 12th Day of Fitmass Active Edge Solutions said to me, there is a trerrific 20% off Fat Grabbers and Carb Grabbers. An ideal stocking filler for those that wish to cheat a little over the Festive Season. That's right you can have your carb charged Christmas Cake, Stollen and Chocolate Yule Log and eat it not that we want to encourage you.

Reduce Carb Digestion

Many studies have shown that a reduction in dietary crabohydrates os associated with weigjhtloss and the preservation of lean skeletal muscle. As a result many people are trying to reduce thier carbohydrate intake. For those that choose particulary high crab loaded meals this Christmas, Carbo grabbers have been formulated to reduce the negative effects of those bad carbs by reducing the carbohydrate digestions. Carbo grabbers uses an extract called from the white kidney bean, which inhibits amylase production, reducing the digestion and absorption of food startches.

Fat Trappers

If you want to reduce your fat intake this christmas from a meal or the numerous parties this festive season at home, office parties, friends, neighbours and you are unsure of the fat content of your festive fayre, the Fat Grabbers is the supplement to choose. This safe, digestive aid is designed to assist with weight management by breaking down and trapping hidden dieatary fat, this prevents it being absorbed unnecessairly by the body.

Health and Fitmass - On the 8th Day...

Health and Fitmass - On the 8th Day of health and fitmass NSP gave to me the perfect solution to keep my gut and families eating at Christmas happily.

On the 8th Day

?Today's Advent offer for better Health and Fitmass: 20 % off Proactyzme /Food enzymes* this is a key system product to support a healthy digestive system. This healthy digestive aid can be used by most people to improve the breakdown and assimilation of food.

At this time of the year over indulgence can play havoc with our digestive system due to excessive overloading, eating and drinking a lot more than usual.  It is no wonder there are so many adverts on TV promoting products to calm it down. The digestive system breaks down food, its key role its extractive vital nutrients and assimilating for use through the day.

Common digestive problems

Some of the most common problems that will occur this Christmas include indigestion, heartburn, acid reflux, stomach ulcers or stomach cramps.

Proactyzme

This is where Proactyzme will come to the rescue and help breakdown those difficult to digest foods and help you gut to feel happier. It contains plant enzymes which are often missing from today's modern diet of processed and overcooked foods. This effective digestive aid contains a powerful combination of six natural plant enzymes: protease, amylase, glucosamylase, lipase, pectinase and cellulose to provide you the most effective way to help you eat more easily and ensure your body assimilates vital nutrition for good health and maintain a healthy digestive system when taken regularly.

Happy Health and Fitmass on the 8th day...may all your food be digested this Christmas more easliy!

Health and Fitmass Advent Offer Day 7

Today's Health and Fitmass Advent Offer Day 7- Tei Fu Essential Oil & Tei Fu Massage Lotion. Quote "Advent Offer 7" for 20% off these fantastic products.

Advent Offer day 7

Massage Treatment

Self massage is helpful if you simply don't have the time or feel you cannot afford a massage. Although having said that my mini massage treatments at Events start at an affordable £10.00. - Ava Hutchinson the ladies winner at the NVH 10 mile thought so. It helped her to recover faster from the race and the massage helped with relaxation of her tired muscles, releasing tension in muscles and joints, transporting waste and toxins from racing away from the aching muscles, enabling her to start training.  Qualifying for a time for the Marathon was important to her she was happy with her treatment.

Ancient Chinese Formula

Tei Fu Massage lotion is based on a unique Chinese Herbal formula created by a renowned Chinese Herbalist especially for Nature Sunshine. This ancient recipe dates back to the Tong Dynasty. Extensive research and development enabled Nature Sunshine scientists and laboratory techncians to create this unique product and mane it 'Tei Fu' in honor of the great herbalist. My clients love it when they have a deep massage treatment, some take it home with them especially of they are on holiday or it will be a long time before they can visit the clinic again.

Tei Fu Massage Lotion formulated to penetrate the deep layers of the skin, without leaving greasy residue or staining clothes. Tei Fu Massage Lotion provides cool-hot sensation which warms up and helps to relieve tight, tense muscles and joints, improving localised circulation and leaves the skin feeling soft and smooth. My clients have also found it useful as a holiday or race takeaway product, to provide releif on the go so to speak. Client have found it useful in the treatment of tendonitis, achilles heel, plantar fascitis, general aches, pains and to reduce post run DMS

Tei Fu ingredients include the properties of : Safflower oil, Menthol, Wintergreen leaf oil, Camphor, Eucalyptus leaf oil, Clove leaf oil, Sweet Almond Oil and Aloe Vera.

Tei Fu Essentail Oil also created from the 1000 year old formula and is ideal for the Nervous system and has a wide variety of appliations. A few drops in an oil burner is refreshing and invigorating, on a pillow at night or on a handkerchief can help you to breathe more easily and help clear the sinuses.

Happy Health and Fitmass - Advent Offer 6:

Think Zinc! for Cold Relief this Christmas, experts say...

On average Adults catch between two to four colds a year, children up to 10 and there is little one can do to avoid it. Don't get caught out this Christmas. Think Zinc for cold relief.

There is nothing worse than getting a cold at Christmas or any time of the year for that matter. Taking a zinc supplement can lessen the severity and duration of the common cold. Scientific evidence suggests taking zinc within 1 day at the onset of a cold symptoms speeds recovery, experts say.... It may ward off colds according to the authors of the Chochraine Systematic Review which included extensive trials involving 1,360 people.

Zinc is a trace element - an essential micronutrient required  for a healthy functioning body, it role includes: maintaining the sense of smell, supporting a healthy immune system, building proteins and creating DNA.   Zinc assists your body  communications at a celluar level by fuctioning as a neuro-transmitter.

The most common food sources of Zinc are poultry and beef, other meats such as lamb and pork contain useful amounts. For the vegetarians, good sources include diary and legumes.

"Zinc 15mg (120)Relatively large amounts are found in bone and muscle, and it's also prevalent in the prostate and retina. Zinc is involved in sugar metabolism and seems to be easily lost from the system. Pregnant and lactating women require extra zinc. This product is derived from zinc gluconate for more efficient absorption. For maximum benefit, it is combined in a rich, natural base of kelp plant, alfalfa herb and thyme herb. Each tablet contains 15mg of zinc. Each bottle contains 120 " Stock No.: 1601 Quote :" Advent Offer 6 "for your discount on this product.

TNT the benefits

TNT 'Low GI Carb, Hi powered nutrient Drink' It's a great tasting carb drink low in GI, provides you with instant energy so it is great for recovery when you have finished your race or training run. It supplies the muscles with a rich supply of nutrients needed for muscle development and general good health, protects the body from environmental damage ( e.g. atmospheric pollution). The high fibre content cleanses the body. It contains a complete set of amino acids, multi-vitamins and mineral nutrients.

Dietry concerns

Many people consume large quantities of highly refined carbohydrate sugary drinks or food which tend to 'spike' the blood sugar and stimulates the production of large amounts of insulin and hormonal activity. This leads to an imbalance in the body, encourage excess fat storage and suppression of the immune system, which lowers the body's resistance to pathogens and virus.

TNT high powered nutrition

This high fibre, low GI, carb, antioxidant drink, just one serving provides more nutrients per than 1kg of fresh fruit and veg.

TNT is a high fibre drink contains multi-vitamins, minerals and a complete set of amino-acids ,essential for  healthy muscle development and good health.  Most of these nutrients are classed as antioxidents which provide protection and maintain healthy body systems.

The high fibre content lowers the GI and this provides longer lasting energy.  TNT contains 18 sources of water and fat soluable fibre, which help to cleanse the digestive and intestinal system. Two servings of fibre per day will go a long way to helping you meet the recommeneded daily allowance of fibre and significantly reduce risks to cancers of the bowel or colon.

Zumba comes to Friary Court - Tea and Biscuits with a Latin Twist

Activating Older Adults The Zumba Gold program was recently introduced by the Peterborough City Environment Trust to adults with learning difficulties at 49 Lincoln Rd and by Axiom to retirement/assisted living homes convention in June at Kingsgate Conference Centre.

As a follow on from the Axiom convention in June, Mrs B Frampton from the friendship club suggested "Zumba gold would great for the golden girls and perhaps some of the boys at Friary Court on Burton Street and it would be nice for them to get together for movement and music followed by tea and biscuits".   The spicy rhythms of Salsa, Cumbia and Merengue are hot enough to add a new twist to plain rich tea or boring old tea and biscuits.

Sue explains, "it's something more than just a typical exercise program, the benefits of movement, is through music and dance. Sometimes older adults or those with learning difficulties may lose their will to exercise." Through party-like Zumba music it gets people moving again.

Caroline from Friary Court welcomed the opportunity to help her residents get a little more mobile and liven up their day with some movement to the beautiful rhythms of Cumbia from Columbia.

The Zumba Gold program promotes flexibility, strength, stamina, mental agility and happiness, making it the perfect program for people.  Happiness, movement and music promote a great sense of wellbeing and liven up what might be a run of the mill day at Friary Court.

Poppies were Blowing in the Wind - An Armistice Day Nordic Walk

What a unique day, 11/11/11 - We remember those from WW1 1914 - 1918 soldiers who gave their lives without regrets. To remember their bravery and heroism we gave them a special remembrance. The theme of our Nordic Walk was poppies blowing in the wind.

This was quite appropriate due to the fact a keen wind was blowing the poppies we had so carefully pinned to our coats, kagouls and Jims hat. There we were on Friday the 11 November 2011 poised with emotions full of sadness and feelings for the loss of those oh so very brave soldiers who went before us to keep our green and pleasant land safe.

Usually we begin the  Nordic walk with something to warm up the group, today was no exception.  Behind a sheltered wall we stood while I recited the beautiful, sorrowful, mournful verses of " In Flanders Fields " By the famous war poet, John McCrae, May 1915.  This was followed by 2 minutes of silence of respect and remembrance before we began our regular lively.

All too soon, we were warming up ready for our Nordic Walk, our pace was purposeful and fairly brisk due to the keen winds.  We stopped to pause a little, chatted to a man and his dog who was keen to join our Nordic Walking club in the future.

We were happy to be alive and enjoyed our Nordic walk despite a strong chill from a stiff breeze that would have been seen blowing our "poppies" in the wind this Remembrance day.

You Want to Start Running?

A long time ago, was the time I started running and I found that it was a very steep learning curve.  My first ever event the 2nd ever Peterborough Great Eastern Run, since then I've completed many half marathons, 10k, 5k and other events not quite so gruelling as 13.1 miles. Now a seasoned veteran of running equipped with over 25 years of pounding the pavements of Peterborough it places me well in helping others to get started from scratch and avoid pitfalls.

In years gone by there was very little advice around let alone people that would be able to offer professional advice on training, avoiding common running injuries,  dealing with injuries, what shoes to buy, what kit to wear, how to warm up, streching, cooling down. My first training run began in a glorified plimsol, and i tis no wonder I suffered from some of the common runners injuries like shin splints, tibia tendonitis and tore a muscle or two. Then I progressed to my first running shoe it was a silver shadow and my feet blew up like a balloon hardly surprising considering how little I had trained or knew how to train.

Fartlek, intervals, terrain, cross-country, hills, tempo run, LSD - what on earth was LSD and Fartlek? and all those other terms seemed like double dutch to me or was it a touch of swedish or some type of drug left over from the '60s ? - It was not the lyrics of a beatles track "Lucy in the sky with diamonds" It was short hand for Long Slow Distance -  and Fartlek was not a rude word but it was a swedish name for "Speed Play".

The Peterborough Great Eastern run, inspires many people to get out there and get fit which is wonderful, and to give back to the wonderful world of running. As a health and fitness professional, I've launched a new program called Learn to Run to help you learn how to run, unravel all the jargon and begin your journey to better health and fitness safely.  Whether it is for your own personal health and fitness goal, to start something new, or you are doing it for your favourite charity this course will help you do it successfully and avoid all the pitfalls that came across.

This Learn to Run - fit program is designed for those that wish to find their running feet, reduce risks to injury and enjoy a new activity safely for better health and fitness. Throughout this course you will find new friends and socialise.  The course will last 12 weeks and offer a sustainable program of running.  Visit the contact page and sign up for something new today.  Warm wishes, Sue x

Sleepless in the Saddle : Catton Park 2011

Sleepless in the Saddle : Catton Park 2011

What an epic weekend, 24 hr MTB Race, Sleepless in the Saddle 2011 + Sports Massage.

Most people were there to see out the summer, relax with friends  both old and new for the weekend,  sharing stories of past experiences and looking forward to challenges that lay ahead.  You might have done all of this and participated in the 24hr mountain bike race too!

This year I joined Kirsty and the Stars Sports Massage team to assist the toughest riders endeavours and support the most exciting event of the season.  SITS has gained a reputation for being one of the most laid back & friendly endurance races in England.

There was the usual level of top facilities at  this Pro Velo event, with quality catering, free bike wash, hot showers, sports massage tent and flushing toilets.  There was plenty including quality sports massage team to help to keep the riders occupied during the moments off the bike

Undoubtedly the toughest section was the night section, this really challenged the riders.  The massage team drew straws for the night shift to enable the team to meet the riders needs and get a few hours of sleep.

Through the night the continual steady stream of riders made their way to the massage tent to help them get some relief from riders fatigue, cramps, tired weary legs, back and shoulders.

Thanks to the Stars sports massage team, including yours truely the riders made it to the end of their event, happy, tired and elated. To book your sports massage contact Sue: 07901 937 665

Active Edge Solutions at the Trashion Show

On Thursday the 09th of June we had an awesome day at the Trashion show. We do hope you were able to enjoy the fun totally awesome fitness sessions and demonstrations.

Thu  11:00 - 12:00   Zumba Fitness FREE demo 09 Jun    Queensgate

Thu  14:30 - 15:00   Nordic Walk FREE demo 09 Jun        Queensgate

Thu  16:30 - 15:00   ViPR Vitality FREE demo 09 Jun        Queensgate

Penny Fletcher joined in the Zumba fitness and we were hoping more people would join in. The crowds were quite dispersed and shy but they were enjoying the music and it did inspire the audience. During the day I met Sue Donnelly and Sara from ESP magazine and Perry who was one of the Trashion show models.  Perry volunteered to join the ViPR fitness session at 16:30 and after a few ViPR activities he found that it was a much more fun way of working out the abs than doing 30/40 situps in the gym. You rock guys, look forward to the next one. ViPR Fitness

Nordic Walking is a rapidly growing activity in the UK using a method similar to the upper body action of cross-country skiing. It uses 90% of your skeletal muscle, burns 46% more calories than walking without poles and is a complete body workout. It's proving popular with women, men and children. It is a great family activity as well as those new to exercise.

Last year Sue celebrated worldwide Nordic Walking day by Nordic Walking the Great Eastern Run, which was well supported by local spectators from the city of Peterborough.

"I love Nordic Walking, its great to be outdoors in the fresh air meeting so many lovely people and connecting with nature. Last year's event was amazing and I know this year's World Wide Nordic Walk day will be even better" said local Nordic Walk Instructor, Sue Burnett

London Marathon Sports and Remedial Massage

Once again the London Marathon approaches and the ISRM are very busy organising the Sports and Remedial Massage Teams for a number of deserving charities.

Each year since graduatation I have been supporting the Marathon runners and providing much welcome relief for tired and weary marathon legs.  It is one of the best things about taking part for these hard working fund raising runners.  It is a treat to look forward to at the end of a long hard run.  Which I know from experience is not easy no one tells you before you start the training how hard it is going to be.

The air will be electric as the runners buzz through the streets of London past all the famous landmarks, the streets will be lined with supporters and well wishers to help them along the way.

This year will be no exception and while we wait for the teams to be allocated we prepare to travel to the middle of London where the runners will gather at the end of the Marathon.  Our journey will be long and arduous for some travelling from different parts of the country.

The common aim will be relieving the aches and pains of the brilliant runners after they pass the marathon finish line.

This year the post race receptions will be announced any day now with directions and maps to let us know where to go and who will be working on the team.

We will be available to the charties from 10 am on Sunday, 17th April until approximately 6 pm and after a long days journey the train will be waiting in the station to transport us home. Happy to have helped the marathon runners recovery.

For all the Marathon Runners on their way to London in the next week or two can benefit from a pre-race massage and a post race massage from £25.00 per session. This runners package offer will be available to all Marathon entrants.  This package consists of two massage treatments one before and one after the marathon.  You must pay for both prior to the 17th of April to qualify for this offer. Total price £50.00 - Single treatments are available please ask for a quote.  This offer is subject to availibility.   Quote: LM201150 at time of booking. Please call now to book yours ;-)

Discover Nordic Walking...

Good afternoon, it's Sunday and the start of another new Nordic Walking week here in Peterborough. Only last night I realised over the last year more and more people are discovering that Nordic Walking is a very rewarding activity for many different reasons, some have managed to stabilise their diabetes count, some use Nordic Walking to help with weight management, improve balance and co-ordination,  some use it to incease energy and boost fitness levels with an outdoor activity and meet new friends.

Another new person who has discovered Nordic Walking is fitness editor of themomentmagazine.com, David Castle. He's found it's not just a walk in the park but much much more. He said in the fitness feature that:  " I discovered, not only is there technique involved, but it's an all over body workout designed to get your pulse racing"

Other benefits of Nordic Walking according to this months fitness feature " Walk this Way" include:

  • Activates about 90% of the human muscular system
  • Helps aerobic fitness but also increases the strength of the upper body
  • Is great as part of a weight-loss programme
  • Fantastic way to rehabilitate after sports injuries, hip operations etc. ( by strengthening muscles that support the joints, it is low in impact, kind to joints)
  • Improves co-ordination
  • Is very fast and easy to learn in the basic form
  • Can be done all year round

We hope that you will be joining us soon to discover more of the environment and how wonderfully beneficial this activity can be. Our Nordic Walking Groups ( Club) are going from strength to strength.   Club membership is currently FREE with every course we run and there are many benefits from membership of this group. FREE newsletters packed with healthy hints tips, fitness, events, news, course, classes, progressions. You'll also qualify for other discounts and offers we make available to you as a member of this growing community.

The moment you discover Nordic Walking it will be the moment you discover a more sustainable way of keeping your body fitter and healther.  We'll help you to discover a new way of looking at the city and your health and fitness.

Join us real soon and discover the difference you feel with Nordic Walking. If you are not quite sure yet about Nordic Walking, why don't you try our taster session on the 5th of March? It's guaranteed to be fun and fabulous. Warm wishes, Sue  ;-)( British Nordic Walking Instructor)

Trick or Treat

By some cruel fate of Nature you find your self in pain this fall. You cannot understand why the fatigue has set in, every move you make is slow and painful, no matter what you do.

DIAL Sports Fitness

Everyone deserves a sporting chance and now thanks to the YMCA at the Cresset Bretton Dial members and others how have that sporting chance.

Today's DIAL Sports Fitness session attracted 50 percent more people than last week. Obviously word is getting around.  Last week I met the delightful Lulu who has been regulary attending the gym on a Wendesday.  In addition to her regulary wednesday session she attended last weeks monday session, she was delighted to achieve her weekly session and bike fitness target. Two or more sessions in the gym a week will help her to reach her health and weightloss goals faster. The gym has some equipment especially designed with DIAL members in mind.  Lulu likes the specially designed bike and there is other gym equipment to help others like Lulu.

When I saw Lulu in the gym today she has some very clear messages for other DIAL members:  " You must come to the gym you are missing out on these fabulous sessions." " I'm loving ever minute.  It's great to have so much help and support and now I feel confident I'll reach my weightloss goal by Christmas"

DIAL Sports Fitness is now available on Monday's 10 am - 12pm,  Wednesdays from 2pm - 4pm and on Thursdays between 1pm and 3pm.  Do come along and it will be lots of fun. Ask Sue if you want to find out more: 07901 937 665

Mapping Active Workplaces & Nordic Walking Routes to Success

Map your cross-country ski in UK - route630475: Nordic Walk Route for designed for an Active Workplaces Project Royal Hoskoning Bookmark and Share

During the past six weeks, Wednesday lunchtimes, I've  been teaching levels 0-6 Nordic Walking techniques, for Royal Hoskoning and I'm confident the ladies will be able to Nordic Walk this route at next week's session with confidence, improve and vary it over the next 6 weeks of their Active Workplaces program. It's been a real delight and great pleasure for me to meet the ladies who like to Nordic Walk at lunch, we haven't quite convinced the guys yet there seems to be stigma and resistance for guys to get out Nordic Walking. The lure of volleyball, the gym and running serve too great a distraction for some...

Let's hear it from the boys!

After Mark learnt how to Nordic Walk (aka Nordic ski-walk) at a previous Active Workplaces program, he was very keen to continue his Nordic Walking journey to better health, fitness and eventually sports. He's been attending Active Edge Solutions improver group every week since the end of his Active Workplaces program earlier this year. Mark said " it's given me a new purpose to my fitness becuase of a previous injury I can no longer run, this is perfect and really fills by fitness gap"

The Active Edge Solutions, Thursday and Friday improver groups are attracting the guys and some weeks the guys out number the girls. Once you get into it you will improve your fitness, increase your intensity and work out effectively and soon you will realise it's not a lightweight workout! So boys what are you waiting for? Christmas? When the snow is on the ground? Time to throw off your stigma and reticenct shackles and rise to the Nordic Walking challenge.

Here's why?

During last few months, when I've been out and about with my Nordic Walking with various groups,  I'm often asked by people including the GUYS about what we are doing. To which I reply " Nordic Walking " and especially guys become interested  when I explain "it's like Cross-Country Skiing and it's only a matter of time before you guys start to take it a bit more seriously and learn how to Nordic Walk for, health, fitness and go on to the sports level".

After all Cross-country skiing - as seen in Biathlon, it's a fantastic work out of the highest calibre. Biathletes and cross-country skiers are renowned for high levels of total body fitness of mind and body. It's great for those looking to achieve the same intensity as running and without the high levels of impact on the joints and bones.  It's also ideal for those, who need to loose weight for health benefits, to increase aerobic capacity, increase calorie expenditure, reduce stress on joints, improve motivation to increase physical activity, have orthopedic problems, athletes recovering from injury and atheletes seeking to cross-train to improve their chosen mainstream activity. There is really something in learning Nordic (SKI) walking for everyone! "

June 2010 saw the launch of the first two Nordic Walk courses, led by INWA British Nordic Walk Instructor, Sue Burnett.  This has been a wonderful start and introduction to Nordic Walking for the U3A.

Way back in January, on one cold, dark and wintry night, some Peterborough people took their first novice Nordic Walking steps.  It is still little known in Peterborough despite coverage in the National press.   When Sue Burnett strolls with her poles in Peterborough people will approach her and say "What are you doing with those sticks" to which she replies " I'm Nordic Walking, for your information this is not just a case of going for a walk with poles it's so much more than that, it can help you to improve your posture,  it's a full body workout, it works 90% of the skeletal muscle,  it can help you lose weight, by burning up to 46 % more calories than normal walking,  it is lower in impact than jogging or walking, it can help reduce body stress, it is great for rehab, it is good for health, fitness or sports conditioning, it is a major workout for core stabilisation, it puts you at one with nature and it is environmentally friendly and gets you big results, is that something that you might be interested in? "

Healthier Habits...

According to Aristotle " You are what you repeatedly do" Breakfast

Some time ago one of my friends said i'm not in the habit of eating fruit and for breakfast I've got  a habit of eating carbohydrate based cereals.  According to the old addage you are what you repeatedly do.

Life then is a force of habit continually eating poor nutrition together with little or no activity is a recipe for increased risks to heart disease, diabetes, obesity or even worse e.g. stroke, CHD, high cholestoral, high blood pressure etc.

You can change for the better, it is easier than you think.  One healthy eating plan and exercise/activity plan supported by your very own Personal Trainer will support you to help you achieve your healthy nutrition and fitness goals in life so you can lead the life you want to live.

Let me help you to form some healthier habits that can help you create better nutritional health, which will  help you to reduce the risks to disease and protect your body and help you to create a better way of life, better health, fitness or sports. To find out more about how contact   me now.

Green Festival, Greeniversity & Nordic Walk

Green Festival

What a fun packed Green Festival day it was bigger and better than ever before according to PECT's Karen Lawrence.  At the launch day (29th May 2010) I met Greeniversity staff, students and tutors everyone was looking forward to a really fun packed day. PECT's Robbie and Hugh were especially looking forward to the Nordic Walking Workshop which was due to take place at 12.

Green Heart

Kevin Lawrence, Heart FM, was intrigued to know why I was walking around with poles, what was Nordic Walking and why was it Green.  To which I replied " Nordic Walking is new  activity to the people of Peterborough so any one taking part for the first time will be on the green side when it comes to Nordic Walking.   The poles are made from carbon fibre, which locks away the carbon and they are durable and will last a very long time and do not use any electricity unlike the other motorised gym equipment, e.g. treadmills, steppers or the static bikes.  As we walk we convert the chemical energy of food into kinetic energy.

Pedal Power

Talking of bikes there is a conference bike careering around the square with about a half a dozen people sat around the central steering wheel. It seems to be going all over the place.  There are youngsters on static bikes generating power using the bikes for a scalectric race track.

Green about Nordic, Nets and Drumming

Back at the Greeniversity stand Karen Lawrence and her team were welcoming people all day, giving away greeniversity goodies and signing up people to the Greeniveristy courses. There was a free programme of events running throughout the day and several people came to join us at these wonderful workshops:

12.00  Nordic Walking taster session with Sue Burnett
13.00  Net making  with John Garton
14.00  A drumming workshop with Darren Goodale
15.00  Veg box cookery with Rachel Huxley

We met lots of people and some took part in the fun sessions.  On-lookers took an interest and seemed keen on the idea of Nordic Walking I bumped into Annie who said "is that Nordic Walking you are doing and is it any good for people with arthritis? " to which I replied "yes, it is low in impact and people with arthritis would benefit from low impact activity that doesn't aggravate the condition. Would you like to join in the session starts at 12?"  She said it would be good to have a look but declined the invitation. Our smallest was young Peter and the tallest was Hugh, thank goodness I had a some tall poles and an adjustable pair.  We had a warm up with poles, we made a Nordic train and lots of fun. Undeterred by by the rain , the Nordic Walking was lots of fun making our sun shine. ;-)

Happy Festival week, and for those that did miss the sessions can find more on the website. To book your Greeniversity courses this week visit : www.greeniversity.org.uk

Nordic Spring Walks in Sunshine...

Thu, 29th of April, Werrington Sports Centre: Nordic Walking in sunshine at last. It is great when you simply want to blow away your wintery cobwebs and dust and take a breath of spring freshness in the air. It is like a breath of fresh air, the trees laden with big pom poms of white and pink candy floss coloured balls of petals falling to the ground like flakes of snow.

Our ground 2.45 miles was covered softly, silently and swiftly. Arms, legs, tummy and torso toned, tricep extensions galore, abs and upper arms toned beneath our fleecy tops and windproofs.

There wasn't a gym in sight for these Nordic Walkers taking super spring like steps in the early evening sunshine and it doesn't feel like you are working out in the same way as you would at the gym.

One of our walkers is a regular gym goer and she said how her gym buddies had noticed her arms were looking more trimmed and toned. She said " This has only come about since I started Nordic Walking. "

How joyful it was to walk into the early evening air enjoying the splendours of blossom clad trees, good company and conversation as we continued our Nordic work out walk.

Fri, 30th April, Bretton Park:  Today the sunshine was brilliant, with a few cumulo clouds and a mackeral sky.  Change was in the air, it was a tad breezy,  but no rain fell during our sunny spring walk.

How marvellous it was to watch a lesser spotted wood pecker flit between the trees at Bretton Park as we stolled our Nordic miles and worked on arm extension techniques.

The best bit was the super full body stretch at the end of the walk it made you feel inches taller and helped to elongate the spine. Posture, rhythm, co-ordination, balance, cardio vascular, agility, muscle strength and endurance all in one superb Nordic Walk session.

Amazing to do so much in such a short space of time.   Join us for more Nordic Walks this spring, visit the www.greeniversity.co.uk to find out about tasters sessions this May, let Nordic Walk put the spring back into your step.

May Taster Nordic Walks and more...

Calling all would be Nordic Walkers, time to blow off the wintery cobwebs and get moving in to May with some Nordic Action every Thursday in May, Werrington Sports Centre. Tasters sessions available through the Greeniversity.

Active Edge Solutions  has teamed up with the Greeniversity  to provide the polers of Peterborough the opportunity to try out this green activity.  So if you have time to spare on either Thu, 06, 13,20 or 27 of May, what better way to spend a small part of your day. Don't just go for a walk Nordic Walk it! Call your Nordic Walk Instructor, Sue Burnett, now to book your place: 07901 937 665

Nordic Ski Walking...

Nordic Walking, known by some as Ski Walking and if you love the mountains and skiing like me you will quickly realise that cross-country skiers acheive incredible fitness levels. You do not have to go that far, and it can be fun at whatever level you choose, health, fitness or sports there is something for everyone.

It is undoubtedly a fun-tastic way of increasing your fitness, health and great conditioning sports because it is an entire body workout.  Last night our Nordic Walkers were feeling their arms "wings" ( their words not mine) were being toned nicely hidden below fleece sleeves where now one could see. How boring would it be do loads of tri-cep extensions in the gym?  In Nordic walking, you do the work, it is so much fun, you hardly notice at all how hard you are workig, but you feel the muscles gently being worked and feel a great training effect, getting a little breathless and raising your pulse at the same time.

Last night we Nordic walked about a mile in 17.29 minutes, an excellent effort by all.  You can progress from learning to Nordic Walk, to Nordic Walk for Health and Fitness and perhaps look at some Nordic Walk challenges or distance Nordic walking.  Or if you're really athletic, what about learning to Nordic Walk for Endurance...Active Edge Solutions has a Nordic Walk that is right for you, do call to find out more information. www.activeedgesolutions.co.uk

Nordic Walking with Sunshine...

Thursday evening the 08th of April we had the wonderful delight of Walking Cuckoo's Hollow with sunshine for the first time this year.   It was simply amazing to be Nordic Walking without gloves had and warm fleecy coats. It was even better to be walking in sunshine, on a dry, calm day without a breath of wind and feeling the warmth of early spring evening sunshine. The water was like a mill pond as we turned towards the Nordic Spring Sunshine Walk

Cuckoo's Hollow to see the moorhens and swans swimming smoothly on the surface all serene and calm. We could not see any turbulance below the shiney smooth surface that relected the golden glow of the sun.   It's huge golden orange firey globe was suspended as if by magic above the horizon as we Nordic Walked our way back to the Sports Centre. The finger like branches of trees punctuated the still silent air, were swollen with buds bursting at the boughs. We smelt the floral fragrance of april blossom as the buds were bursting into bloom.  Their scented blossom adding an array of whites, pinks and deeper cherry colours to our spring evening walk. Underfoot, the grounds were coverd with catkins that had fallen from the trees no doubt the earlier March winds had played a part in that.

Today, friday afternoon the 09th of April, fans of Nordic Walk were delighted to have thrown off their wintery mantles of gloves, hat and coats and were so looking forward to a Nordic Walk in the sunshine. We felt the warmth of the stronger afternoon sun, everyone was fit and well and it took us no time at all to warm up for our walk. After the rain, the wind and sleet of the past few weeks it was a pleasure to pole about in the parkland sunshine.  Today's walking challenge took us on a timed Nordic Walk mile, not a time trial I hasten to add there was no pressure and lots of pleasure in knowing how quickly we could cover a Nordic Walk mile to mark how far we had come.  The idea was to get a little breathless, feel the heart beating in the chest, and a healthy glow in the cheeks. The Nordic not so novices pushed on and challenged themselves to do their best. Did we manage it, yes we did. In just under 17 and a half minutes. The timed mile would have been a little faster had we not stopped to fix a strap and pause to tell a passer by about why we were walking with poles. We could see easily that all too soon the power in the poles would help us to reduce our walking time, the extra strength in our skeletal muscle, the extra capacity in cardiovascular fitness would make it seem less of an effort as bodies become stronger our walks can become longer. One Nordic step at a time.  Here is to the next Nordic challenge. Are you up for it?

Nordic Walking Explorations - Easter Sunday

This Easter sunday morning, like most mornings this week was yet again damp, dreary and dismal.  A friend had phoned up a couple of days before and said it would be a good day for a walk on Easter Sunday.  To which I said it would be a great day for a Nordic Walk on Easter Sunday. Why walk when you can potentially Nordic Walk? As I had missed the training run that morning, the Nordic Poles were a must for me.   Let's takes some poles and I will give you a crash Nordic Walk course, will that be OK.  My friend could hardly refuse, a free Nordic Walk lesson, insturuction and pole hire.  Perhaps secretly was curious to learn about this new activity or was the friend just humouring a Nordic Walking junkie.   It was as well this friend was relatively fit, the terrain was not for the feint hearted Nordic Walker of low fitness levels.  We set off on our journey, poles, all terrain shoes and water and windproofs at the ready and  a dry set of clothing to change into if it got too wet and muddy.

My friend arrives shortly after 11 am and it was starting to look brighter, the skies were a lot bluer, it was windier and the rain clouds were now skudding across the skies at a fast rate of knots leaving the skies clear and cool. An hour or so later we arrived at the start of the route, in a small Leicestiershire village having found the planned visit to the tea rooms was aborted due to Easter sunday closure it was best we get on with the walk.  On arrival at Burrough-on-the-hill country park car park, which was full to the brim (obviously popular on an Easter Holiday sunday), we headed down the foothills of the ancient megalithic village of Burrough-on-the-hill, "NO RABBITS  ".    according to this megalithic site.http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=4782 .

We parked in a small lane away from the main village road, where there was some space for me to give my friend a quick crash course in Nordic Walking. I thought it best to do this on the flatter ground where the terrain was firm under foot and away from traffic.   The start of our walk was along a very narrow road so we carried the poles to practice techniques a little more before putting the pole plants into better practice on the softer ground that laid a head.  Our walk was heralded by clusters of bright yellow daffodils as we turned left from the narrow path away from the main village road.  Taking care not to trip and slim on the soft soggy soily ground I taught my friend to plant the poles in a rhymic movement, I called out " soften your knees" as the track took a descent in the the valley that nestled below the hill, our backs were thankfully facing the wind and the flurry of sleet as we took the descent.  The track followed the descent and care was taken not to trip and slip on the wet ground below.  The route began to climb up out of the valley along a field and through a gate. By this time our shoes were soiled quite heavily with the sticky soggy mud that was along the edge of the field and at the entrance of the gate at least the sleet had stopped but there was a strong stiff cool breeze.

The route ahead too a steep climb out of the valley up the burrogh hill towards the top of the ridge ramparts, the alledged rabbits were not the only things not welcome on the hill. NO HORSES, NO CYCLES on the ramparts, we were walking so it was safe to proceed onwards and a shape climb upwards.  Being propelled by Nordic pole power I was rapidly making light work of the steep ascent, the route to the top picked it's way between gorse bushes as it wound it's way to the top of the hill.

The  Iron Age hillfort rampart and ditch were now in full view, as were a collection of hill walkers, microlite enthusiasts and kite flyers who were taking full advantage of the improvements in the weather and stiff breeze on the hill.  The views were quite breathtaking and on a clearer day it would be possible to see for miles upon miles of the country side.  The climb was well worth the view, because after going up the only way was now down the opposite side of the hillfort. A very steep track down, demanded ski walking tactics and a snaked path to take out some of the steepness of the slope to help prevent us careering too fast down the hill and keep control of pace and direction.  Another steep hill up Fishhill through and round the back Dalby woods, it was waymarked clearly with posts that had been painted with a bright daffodil yellow.  The walk through the woods was very slippery and slimy underfoot we took care to avoid excessive slippage and loss of footing.  Our walk took us back towards and across the ridges and furrows of ancient farmland practices, a sight rarely seen today so well worthy of our Leicestershire walk which came to a close after almost 3 hours.  It did not seem like we had been that long, so enjoyment factor was high, walking was pole propelled, some might consider to be fairly tough going and it would probably be best suited to those of moderate to high fitness and Nordic Walk skill levels.

Confessions of a Good Friday Nordic Walk Junkie...

Today the Nordic Walkers got their Friday Nordic Walking fix and if that wasn't enough to tempt the Nordic Walk junkies.  Last week, I promised a surprise as a treat for Good Friday. But what I forgot to tell them was, two years ago Active Edge Solutions began and it was something to celebrate.

Nordic Walk Junkie

The Nordic Walk started  with a bag of sweets one guilty pleasure a few extra calories contained within the sweets would soon worn off once we stepped into our Nordic Walking strides.  There we were sucking sweets, loads of smiles, warming up and preparing for Nordic Walking miles.  No one minded one jot that the day was dismal, the wind was blowing, the rain was starting to fall and the ground was soggy, slimey and slithery with lots of mud.   Be careful it is slippery underfoot!

We talked about the groups progress as we started to warm up and how it was now beginning to feel like a lot more than walking with a set of poles.  It has taken 3-4 hours to get to this stage and now it beginning to make a lot more sense.  It is important to note that if you were to go out and buy a pair of Nordic Walk poles and you fail to learn good techniques from a qualified instuctor it can be dangerous and end up doing you more harm than good.

It was a bit dodgey underfoot to say the least in these conditions and there was bit of slippage just shortly after setting off.  Thank goodness we had warmed up well. No physcial harm done.  Once composure were gained, poles in hand and postures poised we Nordic walked on with pride. People, poles and a positive mental attitude gained from this fantastic activity ensured we all had fun, plenty of laughs and learned to improve techniques as well as increasing the training effect.  Well done everyone!

As we strode across the parkland area, a gentleman spotted us as his two youngsters kicked a ball.  He said "What is it that you are doing? " To which the happy Nordic walkers replied "this is Nordic Walking invented by Nordic Cross Country Skiers from Finland,  it is much better than normal walking you get a full body work out, it is great fun and you need to see Sue she is our instructor".  I handed the inquiring gentleman a card and said do give me a call when you would like to join in and learn this fun activity, you can see these lovely people who are having a great time we would like to have your company and you are welcome any time.  Do get in touch.  http://www.activeegesolutions.co.uk

Nordic Walk - March Madness

According to one of our group this week her colleagues thought she had a touch of madness when she mentioned to her friends she was going to a Nordic Walk class after work. However, there is method in madness according to Shakespeare's Hamlet. http://www.enotes.com/shakespeare-quotes/though-madness-yet-there-method-t . Now I hear you ask what method is there in going out in the rain and facing the stair rods that were lashing down last night from the heavens at 7pm?

Not wanting to force the walk, it was better to offer options. Shall we stay and walk or should we go home and get try and warm like the other folk. It is raining,we are dressed in rain gear and ready to go for a Nordic Walk, it is an opportunity to get outside and connect with nature, it allows us to free the busy mind from all the turmoils that go within not unlike Shakespeare's Hamlet, certainly a troubled soul with all the seeming madness around in his world. " I'm good to go" piped up one student and with that we all set off into the black of the night, rain or no rain it was warm and we were Nordic Walking at a brisk pace not to be deterred by the rainy dark weather conditions.  There was no thunder or lightening so it was safe to walk.  Taking care on the slippery ground, suddenly the poles were no longer slipping on the wet surface and 15 mins into the walk we were practicing some drills and improving techniques.

All to soon the rain stopped, as we took a turn around the rivulet at Cuckoo's Hollow all of a sudden we saw many small shadows and small hopping objects on the path.  We were careful to plant our poles because we realised that the shadows on the footpath were in fact frogs spawning and returning to the pond.  Indeed rather than being mad we were very privileged to behold this wonderful sight. Had we missed the walk because of the rain we would have missed this wonderful opportunity to connect with Nature. Every one was so glad to leave their daily turmoils behind and enjoy the Nordic Walk. Why don't you join us soon, leave your troubles behind and connect with nature. Britain is beautiful in the rain.  http://www.beautifulbritain.co.uk/htm/pond/pond_faq2.htm

Nordic Walking for Better Health & Fitness

Nordic Walking is a great way to improve your current levels of health and fitness, and for some it is proving successful where other conventional methods have failed to hit the mark.  There was a good turn out on Sunday the 27th of February at Woodfield park to sample this activity and there was a lot of interest to take up the activity beyond the Taster session.

Sue helps the students to get to grips with their poles and to engage with this fun, fabulous, fitness activity.  Designed to help you unwind.

Working Smarter Not Harder...

This morning I woke up bright and early, ate a bowl of sugar free museli, with milk mixed with a scoop of syner-protein to stabilise my blood sugar, followed by a portion of TNT(one scoop provides as much energy as a kilogram of fresh fruit and vegetables and is low in GI ( glycemic index)). This low protein and GI fibre mix stabilised my blood sugar levels (glucose) and gave me plenty of natural healthy energy ready for a mornings bike ride. We rode 40 + miles on the bike, and I must say my energy levels were pretty good throughout the ride, no heavy legs, climbing well on the hills and when I got back another scoop of syner-protein to help with repair and recovery. Other riders dad and son were both feeling worse for wear during the ride (low energy levels, lack of regular training, ride seemed like hard work for both). I am not sure what dad ate for supper or breakfast but his son had eaten a fish and chip supper the night before, a breakfast bowl of cheerios and lucozade, aspartarme laden energy drink during the ride . Next time I reach for an energy drink, naturally I will choose Solstic for great tasting, natural energy to support me even further .

One of the riders suggested using a glucose mix for the feed bottle, but I was unsure how helpful this would be in terms energy levels. This rider also suggested a skimmed milk powder instead of creatine or whey protein. Again, I was doubtful this would help the riders concerned, lots of skimmed milk powders contain hidden sugars so always check the labels and conduct thorough research before making a decision about a product. Recently I came across a triathlete who had this particular experience. Since switching to Syner-protein has made significant improvements in performance on less training.

Extensive research has shown that high levels of glucose in the blood sugar can lead to diabetes and low levels of glucose can lead to hypoglycemia. One of the friends suggested making home made energy bars which would be very expensive to make and contained lots of dried fruit and a whole jar of honey. I am sure they are wonderful, however busy people do not always have time to bake, many find it hard to digest bars while riding, and with a whole jar of honey in the bars the sugar content is guaranteed to be high and may cause an imbalance to the blood sugar levels.

Earlier this year Active Edge Solutions supported cycling bargains racing team cyclists at the Peterborough stage of the tour the riders found as a result they rode well and recovered faster because of Sue's style of specific sports massage.
Rod Freeman, cycling bargains racing team manager, knows his riders always perform better, "with good nutrition, regular training and sports massage. "

Choices are best for the individual and a more informed choice can make the difference to working smarter in your training, performance and recovery. Now, I wonder, which athletes are working smarter not harder when it comes to nutrition, training and good body maintenance!

DIY Stretches

Recently a client asked me this week how he would be able to improve his stretching routine for the demanding sport of boxing and to find out how he could become more flexible in a cost effective way. Whether you run, cycle, take part in fitness or other active sports or general activities it is important to ensure you stretch well and preferably after you have warmed up.

Stretching has many benefits, improving your relaxation, reducing your risks to injury, improving your rate of recovery and helping you to enhance your performance. It is of course up to you how little or much you do. Most people will benefit greatly with the introduction of stretching into their daily life. Depending on how flexible you are or how flexible you want to become for fitness, sports or health here are some DIY suggestions. Each one has has a different focus and it will enable you to improve the way that you stretch, so you improve what you do.

You can develop a stretching routine yourself and in your own time, discover which one works best for you.

MTB Sports Massage Event Work, Hinchingbrooke Park,23 August 2009

"Team Coach"

Sports Massage, pre/post event work, provided by Active Edge Solutions, Sue Burnett seen in action providing recovery rub to Tour Series Rider...

St Ives CC host the next stage of the Eastern Region Mountain Bike League . To help with race preparations and recovery, the St Ives based club have teamed with the sports massage support team of Phil Young and Sue Burnett, Active Edge Solutions to ensure the riders have the best ride possible. In preparation for the Peterborough Stage of the Tour series, June 2009, cyclingbargains race team manager Rod Freeman is a great supporter of Active Edge Solutions and Sports Massage. He advocates that the best riding mix "for performance riders is to have a balanced training program, good nutrition and sports massage".

Both Sue and Phil will be on hand during the event to provide injury prevention advice, pre and post event sports massage to enhance the riders warm up and race recovery easing away the aches, pains and strains of a days hard riding. This will ensure the riders get the best opportunity to improve their chances of a better performance, reduce the risks to injury and reduce the delayed onset of muscle soreness (DOMS).

A bad case of the DOMS is not good for riders, runners or sports people because it means returning to training and racing will take that much longer. Riders can avoid a bad case of the DOMS with an effective sports conditioning massage.

Active Edge Owner Gets Active in Orange

The colour orange is the inspiration for this logo. It is dynamic vibrant and full of energy rather like it's owner. Once upon a time Sue Burnett had a bike frame that was built just right for her and she decided to have it sprayed pink and yellow. When you spray pink on yellow it goes a zingy orangy yellow colour. Some local riders have seen this 'Retro' bike out and about in Peterborough recently and it may even be appearing at time trial event near you soon. When you see this bike in the craziest shades of orange and yellow, it might just stand out in a rack of grey, red and black carbon fibre frames wheels and discs.

The bike might be little older but when your friends give you a backhanded compliment like "it's not slowing you down much" you begin to realise that it is not necessarily the craziest carbon cycle. the slinkiest style of shoe, or shiniest pair of shades that makes you go any faster, train any better or perform your personal best. It comes down to a good training approach, better nutrition and a healthy attitude to getting rest when it is needed. Make sure you include a healthy amount of rest in your exercise routine, eat healthily and approach your training with a purpose, you too will stand the rigours of time and have the time of your life.
